      About Open D

      Open D — D A D F♯ A D — tunes the guitar to a D major chord. From standard, the 6th, 2nd and 1st strings go down a whole step and the 3rd string goes down a half step to F♯. It matches DADGAD except for the 3rd string, which is the difference between a major chord and a suspended one.

      The low D root on the 6th and 4th strings gives a deep, resonant sound that suits slide guitar, blues and folk fingerpicking.

      Tips

      • From standard: E → D on the 6th, G → F♯ on the 3rd, B → A on the 2nd and E → D on the 1st string.
      • Barring the 5th and 7th frets gives G and A — with the open strings, that is a complete I–IV–V in D.
