      The default tuning for six-string guitar, used for the vast majority of songs, chord charts and lessons.

      Press Start tuning, pluck a string and turn its peg until the needle is centred and green. The tuner already knows the Standard notes, so it tells you which string you are tuning.

      About Standard

      Standard tuning — E A D G B E from the thickest string to the thinnest — is how almost every guitar leaves the factory, and how nearly all chord charts, tabs and lessons are written.

      Neighbouring strings are five semitones (a perfect fourth) apart, except between the G and B strings, which are four semitones (a major third) apart. That one irregular gap is what makes the familiar open-chord shapes fit under your fingers.

      Tips

      • Tune the low E first, work across to the high E, then check every string once more — changing the tension of one string slightly shifts the others.
      • A classic way to remember the notes from low to high: “Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie”.
